A POLICE officer was injured during the melee following the Scottish Cup tie between Morton and Celtic on Tuesday night.
The 31-year-old constable was trying to break up a fight between rival supporters when he fell to the ground and dislocated his shoulder.
He was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he was treated and later released.
Superintendent Grant Manders said: "It is always regrettable when a police officer is injured in such circumstances when he or she is merely doing their job."
The policeman, who is from Paisley, was one of a team of extra officers drafted in to police the high-profile clash, which attracted a crowd of more than 10,000 at Cappielow.
Several smoke flares were let off during the match and there were more clashes off the pitch following Morton's 1-0 defeat, when a disturbance broke out in East Hamilton Street at Sinclair Street between fans from both clubs.
Superintendent Manders said: "Seven people were arrested and four people appeared in court yesterday.
"Football should be an enjoyable family event and people who display this type of hooligan behaviour spoil it for everyone and it was a disappointing end to what had been a good family night for local supporters. I will not tolerate this behaviour in Inverclyde."
