For me it’s all about support. Sustained support. Not peaks and troughs, dips and rises depending on success rate at a given time, I’m talking about the big picture, the overall scenario.

Allow me to put forward comparisons on support for both clubs, based on that old enemy of the Yahoo – FACTS. Where better to start than with a comparison of attendances at both clubs pre-season friendlies over the last fortnight.

Saturday 16th July 2005 Rangers take 11,000 fans to Belfast v. Linfield (Source: Belfast Telegraph). Celtic take 4,000 to Fulham (Source: The Sun).

Tuesday 19th July 2005 Rangers take 6500 to Ipswich (Source: Daily Record).

Thursday 21st July 2005 Celtic at home to Sporting Lisbon. Crowd 30,000 (Source: Daily Record) for a game that was FREE to season ticket holders.

Saturday 23rd July 2005 Rangers at home to Borussia Monchengladbach crowd 30, 700 (Source: Sunday Herald). Tickets £17.00

Sunday 24th July 2005 Celtic at home to Leeds United crowd 13,000 (Source:The Sun). Tickets £16.00.

TGFITW? Don’t make me laugh.

Talking of pre-season friendlies brings me nicely to Peter Lawell’s ridiculous assertion when interviewed at Glasgow Airport last summer that “Sellick have a million fans in North America”. That was the same Sellick who played Chelsea a few days later at the 70,000 capacity Seattle Seahawks Stadium in front of 30,504 “bemused locals” and who subsequently played Liverpool in front of a crowd of 24,271 at Rentschler Field (capacity 40,000). The same Sellick who chose NOT to go to North America this summer. Their million fans must have been so disappointed.

Lawell is another in a long line of Yahoos who is happy to perpetuate the myth than anyone who has ever stood on a four-leaf-clover is a dyed in the wool Sellick fan, whilst conveniently forgetting that the majority of so-called “Irish Americans” are in fact Protestants of Ulster-Scots descent (Source: USA National Opinion Research Center).

Then there’s their “massive” support in the Irish Republic. In the summer of 2002, they played two friendlies in the ROI. 7400 was the total attendance for BOTH matches, including fans of the home teams. A week later Manchester United played to a full house and Rangers played Linfield at Windsor Park, again to a full house. Oops, Timmy’s been caught out again!
It could also be mentioned that over 8,000 Rangers fans turned up at Murray Park for a training day 4th August 2004 (Source: Daily Record).

What about the on the domestic front? Yep, The Theatre Of Shame has had bigger average crowds than at Ibrox in recent seasons. In fact the figure is around 9,000 more. By strange coincidence their stadium holds around 9,000 more! No surprise there then eh? (Talking of stadiums, will they EVER attain the UEFA five-star status the vastly superior Ibrox has held for years now?)

Has that always been the case? Not at all. Let’s look again at Timmy’s enemy. FACTS. Now I could go on all day printing these but I’ll just give a few examples taken from season where they out-performed us to prove my point:

Season 1983/84: Celtic (2nd in league) average 18,390. Rangers (4th in league) average 21,995. (Source: SFA)

Season 85/86: Our worst season in 80 odd years, 5th in the League and knocked out of both Cups. Meanwhile, Celtic won the League on the last day of the season. However, we still averaged 25419 to their 24012. (Source: Evening Times May 1986). Take away Old Firm matches and the difference would be even greater as they had a far bigger ground capacity than us at that time.

Season 87/88: Celtic won the league. Rangers were third. Their average home league attendance was 33,199. Ours was 38,568. (Source SFA).

Want to go a little further back? Bob Crampsey (former season ticket holder at The Glitter Stadium) said this in the Evening Times of 14th March 2001 “I confirm that the list of attendances you submit for Celtic Park in the period 1958-64 (too numerous to reproduce here) are accurate and, indeed, crowds at Parkhead hovered around the 7000 mark for run-of-the-mill matches." In other words, 7,000 was their usual attendance.

Indeed throughout history The Rangers have ALWAYS had a larger following than Celtic. Lest we forget season 1993/94 when their average crowd was a paltry 22,759 (Rangers averaged 43358). Does anyone have any idea where the additional 36,000 “faithful” followers have come from? And where were they in 1994?

Which again brings me conveniently to another Yahoo myth. I doubt if there's any of us who haven't been subjected to the lie "Yeez only hud two fousand furra gemme against Partick Fistle...."

The game in question was played on Wednesday 23rd May 1979, a rescheduled match which had been cancelled due to snow at New Year. Why was the crowd so low you may ask? Well, two days earlier on the Monday night we had been beaten 4-2 by Nonce FC in the game that clinched the league for them. Whilst not making excuses, the Thistle game was totally meaningless.

Here's the crux of the matter. The attendance at the game was actually 6,087. This figure is recorded in official Scottish League records. The 2,000 figure came from a Daily Record estimate (it would seem even in those days the Record was prepared to tell lies about our club). Willie Waddell, was moved to issue a statement that rubbished the quoted attendance, and declared the number to have been "nearer 10,000 than 2,000." Incidentally, Rangers won 1-0 thanks to a Derek Johnstone goal. (Source: Scotsman Saturday 21st August 2004). It should also be noted that Ibrox was undergoing massive redevelopment at the time.

By comparison 4,956 turned out for a Nonce FC home match against Dundee on 24 April 1984 (Scottish League Records). So the next time the yahoo in your life starts spouting his lies, be sure to quote him the FACTS and watch him squirm.

And now for the Greatest Yahoo Lie Of Them All. “We had 80,000 in Seville”. Isn’t it amazing how this figure, plucked from the air, has become accepted by the underclass and their press apologists? I even heard Alan Brazil tell us live on Talk Radio that there were 120,000 reptiles in Seville! That bhoy has obviously had an experience that’s damaged him psychologically. Back to Timmy’s Achilles heal. FACTS. The Chief of police in Seville estimated the figure at 45-55,000. The official UEFA figure was given as 58,000. Ach well, let’s add on a wee bit just to make it sound good. Why let 20-odd thousand get in the way of another good Yahoo lie? Their need to be loved shows them for the inadequate’s they undoubtedly are. They are not normal people.

One member Benedicts11 – who has made over 5,000 postings – sneered: “I’ll give him three months.’’ Another called Marty Bhoy added: “I’ll go for nine months.’’

While Stevo1888 said: “Two hours.’’ One twisted punter – who uses the name Ayrshire CSC – wrote: “On the Queen’s birthday. They can both go. What a day!”

Another, calling himself Linkboy, said: “Is it too much to ask for Thatcher on the same day?’’

Last night a pal of Gazza’s said: “It’s just unbelievable people would do this.

MP snubs Celtic invites because of sectarian singing

A FRESH sectarian singing row flared last night after the Ulster sports minister hinted he may snub an invite to Celtic Park in protest at IRA tunes sung by their fans.

Gregory Campbell, a DUP MP, has written to Hoops chairman and former Northern Ireland secretary John Reid condemning IRA chants from Celtic fans at Motherwell last week.

Mr Campbell was asked to be a guest at the home of the SPL champions after claiming he and his wife suffered sectarian abuse by fans on a ferry.

But, speaking in his role as East Londonderry MP, he said: “The recent songs about the IRA would suggest an awful lot more work needs to be done.

“It would call into question attendance at the ground.”

But he praised Celtic and Rangers for trying to tackle the problem of bigots at games.

A Celtic spokesman vowed to consider his letter and added: “We are pleased Mr Campbell recognises the great work which Celtic has carried out in tackling sectarianism.”

Rev's car is trashed by 'bigots'

“BIGOTED” schoolboy thugs trashed a minister’s £18,000 car outside a church as she led mourners at a funeral service.
Two yobs hurled bricks and stones at Rev Agnes Moore’s Vauxhall Vectra at Bellshill West Church in Lanarkshire.

A church officer who witnessed the attack said the teenage vandals hurled sectarian abuse as they caused £5,000 of damage to the motor.

The thugs — believed to be from the town’s Cardinal Newman High School — smashed the front and back windows and dented every panel of the vehicle’s bodywork.

A distraught Rev Moore, 56, said last night: “When I saw the damage I burst into tears. I am broken hearted. I got very little help from the school or the police.

“My church officer has been left quite badly shaken by this. He got a bit of a fright as they were hurling all sorts of sectarian abuse at him and throwing bricks.”

Cardinal Newman head teacher Isobel Boyd rejected claims the school hadn’t done enough in trying to track down the culprits. Police said they are investigating.

Spanish government intervene in Celtic fans death threats

SPAIN has become the latest country to be caught up in an Old Firm storm — this time over death threats to Rangers star Nacho Novo.

Diplomats with the Spanish Consul General in Edinburgh last night confirmed they have launched their own probe into the sick stunt by internet bigots.

Last night Spanish consular spokesman Federico Palomera said: “We have made it known to the relevant authorities.”

They are acting on complaints they received against yobs who posted Spaniard Novo’s home address on a Hoops supporters’ website.

The posting on the popular Huddleboard followed suggestions on some internet chatrooms that Rangers players should be seen as targets for attack.

Furious Ibrox security chiefs contacted Strathclyde Police bosses, demanding an investigation into the Novo web threat.

They also ordered security staff to patrol outside the 29-year-old’s Glasgow home amid fears for the footballer and his family.

Yesterday a source revealed: “It appears the Consul General was contacted after they felt the authorities were failing to act on the Novo situation.

“Not only did Novo have his address posted on a website, rival fans also sing a song which features lyrics praying he will be murdered in his sleep.”

The Ibrox ace has been targeted by opposing fans since turning down a move to Celtic to join Rangers from Dundee in 2004.

Months later, he complained to cops after thugs sprayed “Novo RIP” near his home after an Old Firm victory against the Hoops.

Last night, the Rangers Supporters Trust welcomed the Novo probe.

Spokesman Stephen Smith said: “This move is a logical response to a dishonest campaign motivated by sectarian bile and a sick desire to score points regardless of the truth.”

Rangers declined to comment on the matter.

TWISTED yobs painted sickening sectarian graffiti on a pub linked to Rangers legend Andy Goram.

The vandals struck just days after we told how Goram, 44, left, and a pal planned to turn the Stonefield Tavern in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, into a Gers-themed bar.

Vile slogans including “IRA” and Irish Republican warcry “Tiocfaidharla” — our day will come — were plastered over walls.

The vandals also left personal insults to Goram and the initials “CFC” in green paint.

Anti-sectarian group Nil By Mouth said: “It is the latest example of unacceptable behaviour in Scottish life.”

Celtic fans attack boy of 12 in sectarian attack

The mother of a 12-year-old boy who was attacked by a gang in Londonderry on Saturday has said he is now afraid to go into the city centre on his own.

Una McFarland said her son, Caelin, was attacked by up to 12 males on London Street at about 1630 BST on Saturday.
She said it was the first time her son had gone into the city centre alone.
"They grabbed him by the necklace and they punched him about the head and neck and he fell to the ground," his mother said.
"He got up pretty quickly because he knew to stay on his feet and then he tried to walk away.
"They kept saying to him, 'Who do you support, who do you support'?"
"I know I wouldn't like him going up the town now," she said.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a 14-year-old boy was assaulted by a gang of youths in Irish Street. Two 15-year-olds have been arrested.

And in the Triangle area of the Waterside a man was attacked by three men wearing Celtic football jerseys.
The PSNI have said the attacks may have been sectarian.
DUP MLA William Hay said sectarianism was "a cancer in society".
"These attacks are ongoing and it could take a generation before we get this cancer out of our society, and this is the tragedy.
"There are people out there who still believe that the only way they can deal with some of the issues they feel so strongly about is to attack another community," he said.

"After such a heavy Old Firm defeat the sensible thing to do would have been to stay indoors.

I know you can’t stop people going out and having fun, but there is a time and place for everything — and Sunday night was not the time for Lenny to go out.

When I was playing with Celtic me and the lads used this bar/restaurant on St Vincent Street.

We’d go out together as a team and all our wives would be with us.

We knew we’d be out of harm’s way and we could relax and enjoy our evening.

Times have changed for sure. But when I look back to my playing days I can honestly say I never really wanted to hit the town after any defeat, let alone a defeat to Rangers.

Look at big Stephen McManus. Do you think that the Celtic captain fancied a few beers with his mates on Sunday night? Not likely.

He’d know exactly how the Celtic fans were feeling and he would have headed home, drawn the curtains and crawled straight into bed.

Lennon’s timing could not have been WORSE.

He’s been in Glasgow long enough now to know these terrible things can happen, especially after an Old Firm game.

It’s not right but this is the shocking reality for Celtic and Rangers stars.

But remember, Lennon is no longer a player, he is a now a coach and that carries extra responsibility.

He really should have known better in my opinion.

Yet I know he will be regretting leaving the house on Sunday night. He will have apologised to everyone at the club, not least manager Gordon Strachan."

RANGERS star Nacho Novo was last night under guard at his home after bigots posted his address on the web.
Police were called in by the club after someone revealed the name of his street on a website. A distraught Novo said yesterday: "This is my home, my family stay here and no one will mess with my family."
The web posting came after suggestions in internet chatrooms that Rangers players should be regarded as targets for attack.
The views came amid a backlash to the assault on Celtic coach Neil Lennon, which sparked a large debate on whether Old Firm stars should feel free to socialise in Glasgow after Old Firm games. After Rangers striker Novo's street name was published, furious Rangers security supremo Ken Scott phoned Chief Superintendent Robin Howe, of Strathclyde Police, demanding an investigation.
He also ordered security guards to patrol outside Novo's Glasgow home.
An Ibrox insider said: "Posting someone's address takes the matter into a new dimension."
A police spokeswoman said last night: "We have received a complaint in relation to posts made on the internet. Our inquiries are continuing."

Group of Celtic fans beat up rival fan

CELTIC fans were today urged to help police trace thugs who viciously attacked a man in a Glasgow train station.

The 29-year-old victim was left with a fractured jaw after four men rounded on him at Singer station.

He tried to escape by getting on a train, but the gang followed him and continued the assault until the train arrived at Dalmuir.

The incident happened at 6.50pm on Sunday after the first Old Firm derby of the new season.

The group - described as being in their late teens to early 20s and wearing green and white or white and yellow football tops - were captured on CCTV.

Detective Inspector John Harrington of British Transport Police said: "This was a particularly nasty attack.

"I am anxious to speak with anyone who was in the vicinity of Singer station around the time of the attack and who may have any information regarding the identity of those involved."

The victim of the attack, from Westerton, is recovering from head and facial injuries in the Western Infirmary.

Celtic; Rotten to the core from day one

We conclude the second part of our look at the Origins of Hibernian Football Club today, reaching 1888 and the formation of a football club that was intended by some at least to be a mirror image of Hibernian. In the event things did not work our quite in that manner, and it was to spark a major crisis for Hibernian....
Birth of Celtic Football Club

Brother Walfrid was doing a great deal of good work in Glasgow’s East End, through his Poor Children’s Dinner Table charity. He had called upon the good grace of his friends in Edinburgh many times, and did so again in 1887, asking Canon Hannan if Hibernian might play in a charity match against Renton in Glasgow. Canon Hannan of course immediately agreed, and the game took place on Clyde’s Barrowland ground. An astonishing 12,000 people turned out to watch the Scottish Cup holders draw 1-1. The money raised from this one game was beyond the dreams of anything Brother Walfrid had managed to raise in the past, and it is believed that this was the moment when he made up his mind that Glasgow should have their very own version of Hibernian Football Club.

The Irish Catholic community in Glasgow at this time numbered around 250,000, and Brother Walfrid knew that if Canon Hannan could raise so much from the Little Ireland community of Edinburgh that was a mere tenth of that number, then surely a similar side in Glasgow could do much more. It should not be thought that he in any way wished to harm Hibernian, far from it, he appreciated very much the help that he had received from Canon Hannan and the St Patrick’s CYMS. His reasoning was that he could not continue to expect Hibernian to help his community when they had so much work to do in their own. He endeavoured then to copy the lead of Canon Hannan, knowing that the Edinburgh priest would do all he could to aid him in his task.

Over the coming months several meetings were arranged in Glasgow to drum up support for the idea of a new ‘Hibernian’ in Glasgow. Some Irish Catholic leaders however could see some of the danger signs, as it was becoming apparent in these meetings that some of the men coming to the fore where business-minded with hints that personal gain rather than charitable aims were uppermost in their thoughts. Brother Walfrid however appeared oblivious to this as he pressed forward with his plans, taking everyone at face value.

By November Brother Walfrid was ready along with his supporters from St Mary’s Parish, and they revealed that a new football club would be formed. While most wanted the new club to be named Glasgow Hibernian, Brother Walfrid opposed this on the grounds that it would cause confusion. He got his way, and Glasgow Celtic was born. The real men behind this move however proved to be the businessmen, a builder from Donegal named John Glass and Pat Welsh, a tailor who had left Ireland under furtive circumstances 20 years previously. These men had seen the earning potential of a professional football club, and their subsequent methods of achieving their aims was to prove catastrophic for Hibernian Football Club.

Misguided Delight

Hibernian though were delighted on hearing the news of the formation of Celtic Football Club, and typical of Hibs they made an immediate donation towards the expenses of forming the new club, letting it be known at the same time that anything they could do to help would be done. Hibernian continued blissfully unaware that the founding of Celtic might cause them even the slightest problem, after all did every Irish Catholic not see football as they did, as a means of doing some good for their communities? More important at this time for Hibernian was their first ever tour of Ireland; at last the men of Little Ireland were to visit the homeland of the fathers.

Michael Whelahan was joined by a large party of officials and players for the trip, including John and Philip Farmer who would play a major part in the future of the club. Hibs first game came on Monday 2nd April 1888 against Belfast Distillery, with Hibernian running out winners by three goals to one before a very large crowd. Twenty four hours later and Hibs defeated a United Belfast side 4-1, Hibernian this time earning a standing ovation from appreciative Irish fans.

One month later, Hibernian travelled to Glasgow to fulfil a promise Canon Hannan had made to Brother Walfrid, Hibernian would formally open Celtic Park with a game against Cowlairs. The match ended in a 0-0 draw but was a highly entertaining one for all that, the new Glasgow club benefiting greatly from gate receipts with Hibernian paying their own expenses. On 28th May, Celtic played their own first game, against Rangers, but as they still did not have a full team they leaned heavily on their friends from Edinburgh and seven of the players in their side that day had connections with Hibs – Celtic won the game 5-2.

On Borrowed Time

In the following weeks Celtic played several games and each time used players borrowed from Hibernian. There were rumours doing the rounds of course about the intentions of the new Glasgow club, but these were dismissed by the Hibernian committee who simply would not believe that their close friends would mean them any harm. It’s a great pity that the Hibs men were so trusting, as John Glass and his partners were already making their own plans and these included financial inducements being offered to the best players in the Hibernian side that they might join Glasgow Celtic for the following season.

By August 1888, the Hibernian committee men had learned that the rumours where in fact true, and the cream of the best football side in Scotland would not be turning out for Hibernian, but rather had defected to Celtic and the riches being promised. Just as shocked as the Hibernian men were most of the Celtic committee as well, who had not been aware what John Glass and his supporters were doing. Even if Hibs had wished to take Celtic on like for like, they could not do so, the very being of Hibernian was that every penny earned went to charitable causes, Celtic had undertaking no such principles.

John Glass had recognised the massive financial rewards that would ensue from professional football. The game had gone professional in England sometime before, and Scotland was about to follow, all the same the way he set about using the loyalties of the Irish immigrant population left a sour taste in many a mouth. Celtic were seeking to have the best of both worlds, they would sign any players they wished while still retaining an appeal to the Irish community. Business had, not for the first time, trampled over idealism, money had spoken and it was not the first time in the history of Hibernian Football Club that they would suffer for their own ideals.

SEAN Connery yesterday revealed he gets a hard time from Celtic fans - because he switched his allegiance to Rangers.
The former 007 dumped his boyhood favourites when he met and became close pals with the Ibrox side's chairman, David Murray.
But he laughed off the switch and joked that he gets spat at by Celtic fans when he returns to Paradise.
Connery, who was celebrating his 78th birthday yesterday, was speaking as he launched his autobiography Being A Scot at the Book Festival in his native Edinburgh.
First Minister Alex Salmond, the actor's brother Neil and wife Micheline were among those in the 300-strong audience.
Connery told them he had been a Celtic supporter when he was younger, after being introduced to the club by his father Joseph.
He said: "Football was a great passion of mine while I was growing up.
"My father introduced me to Celtic and we played football in what we called the back green which was, in fact, made of concrete.

"I have maintained my love of football. I went away from it when I was really busy on films and then I really got back into it when I was involved in Celtic and I remember helping with the Jock Stein benefit game."
But he joked about the stick he faces since switching sides to Rangers.

He said: "I changed my allegiance with David Murray. I met him when I got the freedom of the city here and immediately we had chemistry.

"We enjoyed each other's company - he's an amazing chap and we've stayed very, very good friends since."
He added, to laughter from the crowd: "And I get spat on if I go to Parkhead."
A promising footballer, Connery claimed he turned down a contract with Manchester United offered by Matt Busby in favour of acting.

He also talked about his love of golf and revealed his enthusiasm for Donald Trump's plans for a £1billion golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

Connery told the audience: "My first response was I couldn't see anything but benefits for that part of Scotland because it's pretty neglected, apart from the oil fields."

BAD-boy Celtic goalie Artur Boruc partied with rogue Poland team-mates in a late-night booze bash which left a posh hotel room WRECKED.
The controversial goalie was booted out of the squad’s five-star base with two fellow stars after breaking a strict curfew.

And Boruc, 28, now looks certain to miss his country’s opening two World Cup qualifiers as he was sensationally AXED from the team.

Last night, a source in Poland said: “The players got drunk and Artur Boruc was definitely one of them.

“They basically had a party and drank lots of alcohol.

“Other guests rang reception and said they were loud. The hotel staff reacted and they discovered the room was destroyed -especially the bathroom.”

The Scottish Sun can reveal that Boruc, along with team mates Radoslaw Majewski and Dariusz Dudka, disobeyed a direct order to not leave their rooms in the Ukraine on Wednesday night.

Beenhakker’s boys had just lost 1-0 in Kiev and the Dutch coach was in no mood to let his players relax.

But Boruc and co sneaked out of the rooms at the five-star Opera Hotel in the capital and joined several journalists for a drinking session in which the hotel manager claimed the bathroom was wrecked.

Polish Football Federation spokesman Zbigniew Kozminski last night confirmed: “Boruc, Dudka and Majewski took part in an alcohol party with journalists and acted unprofessionally.

“This is why they have been excluded from the national team and our disciplinary committee will now investigate this issue.


“These three players will now NOT be called up for our forthcoming World Cup qualifying games against Slovenia and San Marino.”

However, Boruc denied any wrongdoing claiming people were out to get him and the team to unsettle them.

Boruc said: “It is not true. Someone wants to destroy the atmosphere of the national team.”

But another source in Poland insists the claims are true.

They said: “The players got drunk and Artur Boruc was definitely one of them.

“Leo Beenhaaker said after the game the players were supposed to stay in their rooms on the fifth floor.

“But they didn’t listen to him and went to the sixth floor which was a room of a Polish TV journalist.

“They basically had a party and drank lots of alcohol.

“Other guests rang reception and said they were loud. The hotel staff reacted and they discovered the room was destroyed especially the bathroom.”

The hotel manager refused to be named but says he has footage of the three players entering the room.

The fall-out between Boruc and Beenhakker has sent shockwaves around Poland.

Boruc, capped 37 times, is a huge fans’ favourite after his heroics in this summer’s European Championships.

Poland’s World Cup qualifying campaign gets underway in two week’s time with the nation praying the rift between the pair can be healed.

Majewski and Dudka both refused to comment on reports of the incident.

This not the first time Boruc has hit the headlines with his behaviour.

He has constantly landed in hot water with police and officials for winding up opposing fans.

In April he faced an SPL probe after he wore a ‘God Bless the Pope’ t-shirt during an Old Firm match at Parkhead.

He paraded in the top just seconds after his side beat Old Firm rivals Rangers in a crucial league match - to the fury of the away support.

It was the latest in a line of incident where the keeper - who signed from Legia Warsaw - for ‘irresponsible behaviour’.

Two years ago he was cautioned by police for inflaming the crowd at another clash with Gers at Ibrox.

He angered the home support by blessing himself and laughing at them.

He was rapped after it took cops ten minutes to restore peace in the stand.

Last year he apologised to Rangers fans after he ran about Ibrox with a flag saying ‘Champions’ - after the Parkhead side landed the title.

It was the FIFTH time in 16-months the star had been accused of potentially causing bother with opposing fans.

Months later he was also slammed by Hibs and Dundee Utd fans for making rude gestures to them.

In 2005 he was again reported to police by angry Aberdeen fans when he was accused of making obscene gestures to them at Pittodrie.

Earlier this year Boruc became a dad when his wife Katarzyna gave birth to their son Aleks.

Celts stars' street scrap hell

CELTIC star Darren O’Dea was fined by cops over an incredible street scuffle which left his team-mate Scott Brown battered and bloody.
Defender O’Dea, 21 was nabbed outside trendy Glasgow nightclub Bamboo just moments after 23-year-old Brown was allegedly jumped by boozy punters.

Last night, a witness said: “The place was crawling with cops.”

It is believed fellow Celts Aiden McGeady and Gary Caldwell were also on the night out — at the same nightspot where McGeady was targeted just four months ago.

But neither was drawn into the shameful scenes in yesterday’s early hours.

The witness added: “Guys were giving the players real pelters. It looked like Brown was punched.”

Scotland midfielder Brown was allegedly attacked after simmering trouble in the club spilled into the street.

Another source said: “Brown had a big gash above his eye.”



Cops rushed to the scene and O’Dea was arrested and given a £40 on-the-spot fine for breach of the peace, before he was sent home in a taxi.

O’Dea and Brown were unavailable for comment last night.

But a woman at O’Dea’s home in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, denied he was fined.

Last night, a Celtic insider confirmed the rap and said: “Scott was jumped. All Darren did was give the guys a bit of verbal.”

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: “A 21-year-old male was issued with a fixed penalty and released.”

She added two men, aged 18 and 19, were arrested and charged with assault.

Celtic said they are probing the row.

FALLEN ex-Celtic star Mike Galloway was last night facing jail for threatening cops with a knife during a bizarre armed siege.
The 43-year-old alcoholic was only arrested after officers ended the two-and-a-half hour stand-off by zapping him with a Taser gun.

Now Galloway — whose football career was ruined by a horror car smash — could be caged for up to SIX MONTHS after he appeared in court to admit carrying the blade.

Last night, the troubled star said: “I was drinking beer from the Friday to the Tuesday — I honestly can’t remember how much.

“I knew I was heading for self-harm and called the police to help.”

Officers watched as the ex-Hearts hero threatened to slash his own throat at his home in Tweedmouth, Northumberland.

The dad-of-two — who has a history of self-harming — also told them: “I’ll stick it in my stomach.”

At one point, Galloway even left the house during the August 5 drama — to take his dog for a walk.

But it only ended when he dropped the knife and was shot with a Taser.

Prosecutor James Long told Berwick Magistrates Court: “The defendant was aggressive and volatile.”

But defence lawyer Gillian Ford said: “The knife was only to self-harm.”

She said Galloway was now regularly attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

The case was adjourned until September 4 and Galloway was released on conditional bail. But he was warned he could face up to 26 weeks in jail.

Galloway’s world collapsed when his legs were smashed in a 1995 car crash while on loan at Leicester City.

He was given a given a £200,000 testimonial at Celtic Park a year later.

But in 2001, he was banned for eight years for his third drink-driving offence in four years.

In 2006, Galloway told The Scottish Sun how he’d tried to hack off his leg with a PIZZA KNIFE after his wife Lorraine, then 41, kicked him out.

Galloway is now coaching at Northern Alliance club Berwick United. He scored eight goals in 103 games for Celtic after moving from Hearts in 1989.

A CELTIC fan has been sentenced to four years in jail by a Spanish court for two drink-fuelled Champions League attacks.
The teenage Hoops supporter battered two men with beer jugs ahead of a match against Barcelona.
The 19-year-old - known only as John D - appeared in court last week after spending more than four months behind bars.
Now he is set to be sent back home to Glasgow to serve the rest of his prison term.
A court heard how the thug assaulted a drinker and a bar owner on March 3 - hours before the clash at the Nou Camp.
He had been drinking with his dad and eight fellow fans in a pub in the town of Sabadell - 15 miles from Barcelona.
In a bar called Sinfo, he grabbed a half-litre beer jug and smashed it across the head of a local man. He then crashed a second glass over the head of the stunned bar owner, who had attempted to break up the fight.
Both victims required stitches in hospital - and the fan was quickly arrested.
He was later identified by three witnesses and has been held in Can Brians jail since then.
Last week, the teenager was jailed for four years for the attacks.
It emerged his family had paid £2300 in compensation to the victims, which helped to reduce his sentence.
A court source said: "The expectation is that in the short term, he will be placed in a prison in Scotland."

Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell has told how some of his team-mates called him an "Orange b*****d".

Hero Gemmell, a Protestant, also claims there were players who wanted to turn Celtic into a Catholics-only club.

He said he suffered the abuse at the start of his Parkhead career in the early 1960s.

The star - who scored in Celtic's European Cup win in 1967 - told how he and fellow defender Ian Young were the only Protestants in the team when he first arrived at the club.

Gemmell said: "If either of us had a bad game we would get bigoted abuse.

"Certain other players would say, 'What do you expect of an Orange b*****d?

"They would say it directly to you, and they were not having a joke or a laugh.

"I don't know why they called an Orange b', as I had never been in an Orange lodge in my life.

"A handful of players at the club could have been described as real bigots and they would have liked to see a Celtic side that was 100 per cent Catholic."

Gemmell, 61, tells in his new book Lion Heart how he was backed by chairman Sir Robert Kelly and players like Billy McNeill and Steve Chalmers.

The former full-back - who played more than 400 games for Celtic - said: "I just wanted to go out and play and as I got more experienced more senior players saw I was good for the team and everything became ***ky-dory.

"But there had been some resentment of me when I first became established.

"To his credit, the Celtic chairman Sir Bob Kelly was always keen to stress my merits as a player.

"And guys like Billy McNeill and Steve Chalmers were never bigoted.

"The bigoted guys had been at the club for a long time, but why they thought the way they did, I don't know."

"It was the search for televised cricket that took me into the Porter Bar in suburban Edinburgh on a Saturday lunchtime, and possibly the funniest incident I have witnessed while watching broadcast sport.

The Celtic v Rangers match was on, playing to an audience of enthusiastic Celtic fans, one of whom took to jumping on the table and jabbing the screen with his finger at any outrage he felt the Rangers players had committed, accompanied by imprecations containing our two best known four-letter words, used as verb, noun, adjective, and adverb.

Thus Rodriguez was dubbed "a little f***ing Dago bastard f**k," and worse; Prso was told to "get the f**k away back to Croatia and feed your f***ing family," and various other players in blue were given similar treatment, with the choleric fan showing an almost uncanny knowledge of their provenance, and the appropriate racial slur for the occasion.

This continued unabated until the referee booked Celtic's Senegalese defender Camara, at which the fan leapt up and spluttered at the referee, utterly without irony: "Get away to f**k, you wee racist c**t.""

A 38-YEAR-OLD Edinburgh man is expected to appear in court in Spain today charged with stabbing a fellow Celtic supporter on the eve of the club’s Uefa Cup final match against Porto.
The man, who has not been named, is reported to have attacked his victim near an Irish bar popular with visiting supporters.

The 23-year-old victim, was eating dinner with friends near Seville’s 15th century cathedral when the knifeman struck.

He was taken to hospital after the stabbing where he was being treated for cuts to his arm and neck last night.

In a separate incident another Celtic fan was due to appear in court after wrecking his hotel room in the Novotel Hotel in Seville after a drinking binge. The 41-year-old man was said to have caused serious damage.

However, both incidents have been seen as relatively minor as tens of thousands of Celtic supporters descend on Seville to soak up the sunshine and atmosphere in the build up to their side’s first European final for 33 years.

Spanish authorities have been preparing for the mass influx of supporters for tonight’s match against Porto and it has been estimated that as many as 55,000 Celtic supporters will be in Spain, with or without tickets or accommodation.

The exodus of Celtic fans by air is continuing unabated today as it emerged thousands of fans were catching last-minute flights to Spain for tonight’s match.

More than 40 flights are scheduled to leave Glasgow and Prestwick airports carrying around 18,000 supporters to Seville in time for tonight’s game.

Most fans are expected to fly back tomorrow following Celtic’s clash with Portuguese giants Porto at the city’s Olimpico Stadium.

British Airports Authority spokesman Malcolm Robertson said there had been a steady flow of fans at what is already a busy time of year for the airport. He said: "Tomorrow we have 65 flights coming back with supporters. Most of the people who have flown out in the past few days will be coming back at the same time.

"It could be our busiest day of the year as we have an estimated 30,000 people coming through Glasgow Airport."

The British Consul in Andalucia, Bruce McIntyre, said today he was confident the authorities would cope with the influx "I attended a meeting last night and the whole system of securing and policing the event seemed pretty well sewn up, so I’m hopeful that everything will go off without any problems."

"The fans have to do what they can and they will probably spend most of the night in the bars or in the park," he said.

Tickets for the game have been changing hands for hundreds of pounds - although officials have warned fans that they could be buying fakes. There are said to be 700 forged tickets in circulation Mr McIntyre added: "I hope they will be moderate in their partying, Seville is a fairly welcoming place but they won't take too kindly to anyone causing fights or that sort of thing."

Uefa and the Spanish police have also issued a warning to fans not to attempt to buy a ticket at this late stage, as it is likely to be a forgery. "Don't waste your money buying your tickets from touts," said the Consul. "You'll lose your money and you will not be allowed into the stadium."

In Glasgow, extra police officers are being drafted in to cope with the thousands of fans expected to crowd into pubs and clubs on Wednesday night.

DRUNK Celtic fans who caused trouble prior to Alan Shearer’s testimonial game have been spared jail.
Gary Taylor, 24, and Robert McKernon, 40, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday charged with affray on May 11 last year.
The court heard the pair were with a group of Celtic supporters in the City Vaults bar in the centre of Newcastle and had been drinking all day.
James Adkin prosecuting said the fans were “becoming more and more boisterous” and one of them somersaulted off the stage.
He said one of the men was ejected by a doorman. When the doorman returned he was confronted by a group of angry supporters, one of whom was holding a bottle. The doorman was set upon and assaulted.
Other doormen from the bars in the Bigg Market came to his aid and he was eventually taken to Newcastle General Hospital.
The court heard both Taylor, of Ardrossan, in Scotland, and McKernon had been arrested and were clearly in drink.
Carl Gumsley, defending, said: “It’s clear that part of the group of idiots were acting idiotic.”
He went on to say that Robert McKernon, of Corrie Crescent, Salt Coats, in Scotland, had received a broken eye socket in the melee and “lessons had been learned”.
Sentencing the pair to nine months each, suspended for one year, Judge Esmond Faulks said the men had had far too much to drink.
He said: “One of the doormen was struck on the head with a bottle or bottles and suffered a number of other injuries.”
Both men were also asked to pay £500 costs and given football banning orders in England and Wales.
McKernon was asked to pay £1,000 compensation to the doorman and Taylor £500.
Thousands of Celtic fans travelled to the city to watch the match which attracted a 52,000-strong crowd to bid an emotional farewell to the Magpies hero on May 11 last year.
A group of up to 39 Scots made their way to the Bigg Market bar before the game and had been drinking there at about 7.45pm.
In the brawl, which involved up to 10 men, four security staff were injured, one seriously. Ian Sewell was left covered in blood and needing hospital treatment for cuts to his head and face.
There was no football-related violence reported to Newcastle police before or after the game.
Celtic stars played a Shearer team of past and present greats.

"How dare you compare celtic fans to the Rangers yobs who shamed Scottish football in Manchester. Celtic fans are peaceful have an exemplary reputation across Europe and are welcomed in every city in the world. If I ever see you in the street I will punch fu*k out you!”

CELTIC FANS RETAIN VIOLENCE RECORD

Despite Greater Manchester Police's official figures of between 250 and 265 thousand Rangers fans travelling to Manchester for the UEFA Cup Final from all over the world, Celtic fans have managed to cling on to their record of 42 arrests in England at a football match.

In 2003 a measly 7'000 of their fans arrived in Blackburn for a match in the UEFA cup. Although so little of "The Greatest Fans in World" had made the short journey, hundreds of their fans clashed with police as they attempted to charge turnstiles without care for the women and children in close proximity resulting in forty two being detailed by Lancashire police.

With Manchester police already admitting to errors in judgement it really does make the trouble witnessed there pale into insignificance when you study both figures.

FYI: Eighty Celtic fans were arrested in Glasgow City Centre on the evening of their UEFA Cup Final in 2003 with many more arrested (for in particular theft) in Seville. Official figures for these arrests were never released but we're working on bringing them to you. The truth is out there.

Anti sectarian organisation 'Nil by Mouth' have this to say on it

Thank you for your interest in Nil by Mouth.

The Scottish PremierLeague's match observer has responsibility for reporting unacceptable conduct at matches under the SPL's jurisdiction. Any findings in this respect are normally reported publicly and we await the findings in relation to yesterday's Celtic v Rangers fixture.

This is the first complaint we have had reporting that this particular song was sung at the match and I thank you for drawing this to your attention. I personally heard some supporters singing the song in Glasgow city centre early yesterday evening and had any police officers been present at the time I would have reported it to them as a breach of the peace. The song, which I understand is sung to the tune of a Christian hymn, is in Nil by Mouth's view clearly sectarian and will understandably be offensive and upsetting to many football supporters and members of the general public.

Nil by Mouth has commented in today's Scottish Sun in relation to the t-shirt displayed by Celtic's goalkeeper at the match. We have not had any media enquiries regarding sectarian singing at the game and indeed your complaint is the only such report of this we have received. We will take your complaint into account and consider this along with any other evidence presented regarding sectarian behaviour at the match. If sectarian singing took place then we would urge the SPL and clubs involved to respond in line with the policies they have in place to challenge sectarianism. Perhaps you would consider forwarding your complaint to these organisations to encourage them to take action?

CELTIC fans travelling from Northern Ireland for the club's key title match tomorrow say they will wreck a minute's silence in memory of the Queen Mum.

Hardline republican supporters have vowed they will boo loudly during the official silence at Parkhead - plunging the club and Scottish football into shame.

The claims come just days after the Mirror told how SPL bosses had refused to order clubs to play God Save the Queen to try to avoid such embarrassment.

The game will be delayed for the mark of respect.

But club bosses fear violence will erupt in the stadium after Irish fans vowed they will jeer throughout the tribute to the 101- year-old Royal, who died last Saturday................

AS a soccer fan from New York who of Irish decent found myself aligned to Celtic FC but i find this blog not only fascinating but eye opening in the extreme as the facts are backed up as FACT and find myself questioning my allegiance to such a club add this to the only Celtic soccer fan to leave a comment leaves a Sectarian one. Are Celtic's chickens coming home to roost at long last?

For too long their self-aggrandising 'Greatest Fans In The World' tag has obscured the incessant IRA love-in among sizeable chunks of their away support.

Maybe, like Rangers, some UEFA involvement and the treat of some serious action will get them to pay more than lip service to a problem they looked like trying to fix then conveniently forgot about.

Chief executive Peter Lawwell can posture all he likes for the benefit of the supporters.

But having looked at some of the footage concerned, if that's his definition of a minority, then the majority must be hell of a size.

It appears their "Seville Calculator" works in both directions when it suits the powers-that-be at Celtic.

Uefa is examining videos appearing to show Celtic supporters involved in sectarian chanting in Barcelona.
A Uefa spokesman confirmed the footage included singing outside and inside the Nou Camp for the Champions League last-16 match on 4 March.

"We have received some footage showing Celtic supporters singing some alleged anti-Queen and pro-IRA songs - sectarian songs," he said.

"If the investigation is conclusive, a disciplinary case would be opened."

Several videos have been brought to Uefa's attention, including film of supporters at the 'fan-zone' designated for travelling supporters.

"We take care of all manifestations of sectarian singing," the Uefa spokesman added.

"The only condition is that it must be in the immediate surrounding area of the stadium. There was alleged sectarian singing inside the stadium.

"It will depend on the easiness of having these songs understood and the quest of finding other evidence."

A Scottish journalist is believed to have used his editorial friend at the Sun newspaper to print a story attempting to blacken the name of late Rangers legend Sam English. For reasons unknown to anyone but himself freelance journalist Paul Drury decided to pen the damning story which when read you are lead to believe that Sam was at fault for the sad death of Celtic goalkeeper John Thomson.

The story written by Drury was touted around all the newspapers in Scotland. None of them thought the story was worthy of printing except his friend at the Sun.

In case you are unaware of the history behind the article Mr Thomson died tragically during a Glasgow derby on September 5th 1931. In a brave attempt to win possession Mr Thomson collided head first with Mr Sam English’s knee with fatal consequences.

Once familiar with the incident it is clear that the death of Mr Thomson was a most tragic accident. We should not allow Mr Thomson’s memory to be degraded or used as a pawn in the minds of those who wish to see hatred or intent to harm when it was not there.

Anyone with a basic knowledge of the facts surrounding the untimely death of Mr John Thomson should be able to tell that Mr Drury’s article is imbalanced and essentially misleading.

Till the day Sam died in Vale of Leven Hospital of motor neurone disease on April 12th 1967 aged 58 English was haunted by the accidental death of Mr Thomson.

John Thomson - Sam English (A haunted man)
"I’m not usually one to start a thread about Rangers but given the number of attempts by the darkside to slander and smear the good name of our heroes and legends in some kind of bizarre point scoring exercise I thought I’d redress the balance and show that we do not need to stoop to their level and can rise above their deep rooted hatred of all things Celtic and set straight a story and a lie that is over 70 years old.

All of us should know and recognise the name Sam English, a name that will forever be entwined with the history of Celtic and of course John Thomson. Recently I finally got round to reading one of my xmas presents, Tom Greig’s excellent book ‘My Search for Celtic’s John’ (a book I can highly recommend) and I was surprised to discover as he described that fateful day and the aftermath that some people were under the impression that John Thomson’s injury was caused by a ‘deliberate’ kick to the head. I don’t know if it was just me but from the first time I had heard about the tragedy I’d always been told that it was just a tragic accident and no one was to blame. This was the first time I’d heard a conflicting story and after some further research into the subject found out this alternative story was completely untrue but that some regarded this version of events as the truth.

There is a reason that this untruth may have slipped into the realm of fact though. When Thomson was admitted to the Victoria Infirmary the patient’s notes included the phrase ‘the patient was admitted having received, it was stated, a kick on the head’. There was no name attached to this statement and may have been a result of no one knowing the exact truth at the time of the notes being written. However it appears that this was enough for a lie to take root and to this day some still regard it as fact. In addition Willie Maley made a rather ambiguous statement at the fatal accident enquiry when asked ‘In your opinion, was it an accident?’ and his reply was ‘I hope it was an accident. I cannot form an opinion as to what happened as I did not actually see the accident’. Some saw this as a serious aspersion on the character of Sam English but many regard this statement as coming from a grief stricken man whose words were not intended to be interpreted as they were. Many felt this added credence to the ‘deliberate kick’ assumption.

The evidence to back up the fact that the whole incident was nothing but a tragic accident though is overwhelming not least that the fact that the fatal accident enquiry returned a verdict of accidental death. Not one of the players on the park that day or any member of Thomson’s family held English responsible for the accident. Indeed English met Thomson’s parents twice and the Thomson family also published a letter in the Lochgelly Times on the day of Thomson’s funeral publicly exonerated English of any responsibility for the accident. It was a sign of the Thomson’s strength of character that despite losing their son at such a young age they still found time to give comfort to English and realised the burden he was to carry for the rest of his life.

Sadly this wasn’t enough to stop English being taunted by supporters and players throughout the rest of his career. English was only 23 when the accident happened and only a few months older than Thomson. He only signed for Rangers in the summer of 1931 after his goal scoring exploits for Yoker Athletic had alerted them to his talents. It seemed a long and successful career lay before him and the game against Celtic was his first derby in only his 7th competitive game for Rangers. There are many accounts of what happened that day but all eyewitness accounts surrounding the incident itself state that English got a shot at goal as Thomson came out to block and Thomson deflected the ball away for what should have been a corner but his momentum carried him into English where his temple comes into contact with English’s knee and thus his fate was sealed. At no point did English’s foot make any contact with Thomson’s head. This scenario is also supported by photographic evidence.

The Rangers manager of the time Bill Struth, not often held in high regard by Celtic fans, has to be commended during this time as he took the responsibility to send a car for Thomson’s parents in Fife once the seriousness of the situation became clear and he along with Rangers captain Meiklejohn and English visited Thomson’s parents a few weeks later. It was also Struth who decided to play English in the game immediately after Thomson’s funeral adopting the ‘best to get back on the horse’ approach and by the end of the season English had scored 44 goals (still a record for a Rangers player) and he had also won a couple of Northern Ireland caps but despite his exploits he could not forget that fateful moment and his play began to suffer as his heart was not in it. A move to Liverpool was hoped might give him a fresh start but limited success saw him return to play for Queen of the South before finishing his career at Hartlepool at the age of 28.

All through the remainder of his football career English found he could not escape the tragedy. Almost every team he played against used the death of Thomson to their advantage and he was constantly taunted about it and it didn’t stop after he left the pitch both he and his wife were victims of shameful accusations and later this was turned against his children and his grandchildren. Of course there were also many hundreds and thousands of people who absolved him of any responsibility and supported him through difficult times. These of course included many decent Celtic fans.

Having played football myself for over 20 years the worst injury I can ever remember inflicting on an opponent was a broken nose and I felt really bad about that even though it was accidental. I can’t even begin to understand what English must have felt throughout his life and the ignorance of those who sought to gain an advantage or to inflict more misery on him and his family by continually taunting and reminding him of the tragedy. There are many, including Celtic fans, who should feel ashamed at the treatment English received after Thomson’s death.

Sam English died in Vale of Leven Hospital of motor neurone disease on April 12th 1967 aged 58.

I decided I’d wait until the 40th anniversary of his death to post this story and if what I’ve written above changes the opinions of just one person then it will have been a worthwhile exercise.

On that fateful day on September 5th 1931 not one but two men were victims of a terrible tragedy.

Scores of boozy morons were caught screaming f*** the Queen and pro-IRA slogans during a giant outdoor bash thrown for the recent Champions League clash.

A string of the hate-filled mobile phone clips quickly sprang up on the internet. And now the Parkhead club could be hauled before Euro football chiefs to explain the shameful scenes.

Last night a UEFA spokesman said "The disciplinary department has opened an investigation following their watching and assessment of the footage."

Around 10,000 Hoops fans invaded Barcelona earlier this month for the match,which the Spanish side won 1-0, but a minority of yobs trashed the reputation of decent supporters.

Several vile videos were even shot at the official Celtic Meeting Point fans' zone - as well as various bars.

A UEFA source said "If the investigation is conclusive, it will turn into a disciplinary case"

"I went to a Celtic supporters' dance with Tommy Burns and our wives one Saturday night and it's something Carol and I still laugh about today.

Tommy picked us up in his new Audi and it was just another Saturday night for him, a supporters' bash, this time in Springburn.

We happily spent time chatting to the Celtic fans and heard about what they thought of the team and how much they craved success.

A good time was had by all but when we left around midnight we quickly discovered Tam's car had been broken into and his stereo ripped out and stolen.

The committee men were informed and were obviously apologetic.

"Just come in for one last quick drink and we'll see what we can do," was the strange offer.

Within 15 minutes the stereo was back in Tommy's car, the culprit had been identified and given a slap for damaging a Celtic star's motor!

These days players at the top level tend to have an inflated idea of their own celebrity.

A bit of time spent with people who make sacrifices every week to support their team might make them realise how lucky they are.'"
